Handing Out Avon Samples, 2005
Acrylic on Panel
Jessica Sims received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). She worked as a graduate assistant in the UNCG Department of Art, and later as an artist lecturer. Sims has served as the Vice-President of Artspace at Plant Zero, a local non-profit gallery in Richmond, Virginia. Sims brings forth her ability to energize a blank canvas through her use of intense color and expressive, playful forms. She balances the highly toned surface of Handing Out Avon Samples, by contrasting color and line. Sims creates artwork on both canvas and paper that is uniquely abstract and vivacious. Sims has exhibited artwork in Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. Her honors and distinctions include the Howard Award and Holderness Scholarship from UNCG, and the Senior Merit Award from VCU.
