Trio, 1999
Oil on Canvas
Keith Buckner attended UNCG for undergraduate and graduate work, receiving a BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 1976, and an MFA in Painting and Drawing in 1983. In 1991, he received the Chancellor’s Art Award, which made his work a part of the permanent collection of UNCG Student Art. Two of his most influential teachers, Setsuya Kotani and Wally Barker, are included in the Weaver Collection, as well as fellow students Elizabeth Lentz Ross and Brad Spencer. Buckner, a painter and musician, painted Trio to pay homage to the bands that brought him such pleasure. He describes his painting as “painterly realism with an emphasis on the abstract qualities of the motif as opposed to details.” Exploration of color relationships is of great importance to him. Buckner is part of the UNCG staff, working on campus in Jackson Library. He continues to paint and his work is regularly included in local and regional exhibitions. Past exhibitions include three years in Art On Paper at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the 1984 North Carolina Artists Exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art, and numerous exhibitions at Green Hill Center for NC Art.
