Stoneware with Copper Red Glaze
Born in Japan, Setsuya Kotani received his BFA from the University of Hawaii in 1961, and his MFA from Columbia University in 1970. He served as Associate Professor of Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 1974 – 1999, teaching both painting and ceramics. He continues his relationship with the Department of Art as Assistant Professor Emeritus. Fellow faculty, Andrew Martin, A. Doren, Robert Gerhart, and Billy Lee are also included in the Weaver Art Collection.
The ceramic sculpture, Untitled, is in sharp contrast to the subtle lines and hushed color harmonies of Kotani’s paintings. The copper red glaze and startling spike are a bold invitation for the viewer to follow its upward burst of energy.
Kotani exhibited internationally, and most recently at the Grand Palais in Paris. He is considered a master craftsman and living treasure in Japan. Kotani participated in the 2004 Art On Paper exhibition at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and his work is included in their permanent collection.
