Oil on Linen

A native of Baltimore, the young Jack Stone studied art at the Baltimore Museum of Art. During his service as a medic with the Marines in Vietnam, he continued to draw, becoming more intrigued with the mystery of seeing. Stone attended the Maryland School of Art and Design, subsequently earning his MFA in Painting and Drawing in 1981 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Stone paints with intention, satisfying the urge to put color and line on a flat surface, as he responds to the landscape. He keeps his compositions simple and uncluttered, while capturing the essence of the subject to engage the viewer. Striving for a simple, fresh, look, Stone recognizes that “painting is a way to see keenly and deeply.” His landscape work is based on travels in the Rocky Mountains, rural North Carolina and western Virginia.
