Color Photograph

Arnold T. Doren, known professionally as A. Doren, taught photography in the Department of Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) from 1978 until he retired in 2002 as Associate Professor Emeritus. At UNCG, Doren’s classes were always filled to capacity. He was described as having a fiery enthusiasm about his teaching. Doren described himself as a purist. His images are simple; they evoke a mood. In the mid-1970’s, Doren began work on a series which he called “Americana Faces.” The series did not comprise just faces, but rather the faces of the peace that he was continually seeking. He spent two months traveling by bus through the Southwest and West gathering images. The two landscapes included in the Weaver Collection, Montana and South Dakota, probably came from this series. Doren’s commitment during a 45-year career, during which he captured on film memorable scenes from New York to China, earned him awards and international distinction. A selection of his work appeared in the original Time-Life series, Photographing Children. His photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, George Eastman House of Photography, MIT, Dallas Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
